Is it time for Willie to leave TV for good? by Ed Sicam

I join the countless concerned citizens who expressed disgust at the way Willie Revillame treated six-year-old Jan Jan Suan on his show "Willing Willie" on TV5. I urge the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) to go beyond their press releases and not let Willie get away with it.
Why am I not surprised at Willie's latest act of impropriety? He is a recidivist who has never learned from his previous mistakes. In 1999, "Magandang Tanghali Bayan" was suspended by MTRCB because of the way Willie and co-hosts Randy Santiago and John Estrada behaved with the Calendar Beauty contestants.
In 2003, Willie was back on the air with "Masayang Tanghali Bayan" but it wasn't long before his arrogance got him into trouble again. I was a member of an MTRCB committee that recommended his suspension for uttering a sexually suggestive joke at the expense of the height-challenged comedian, Mahal. Before ABS-CBN could impose the penalty, Willie voluntarily resigned.
Two years later, the Kapamilya network conveniently forgot his past transgressions when its noontime show was floundering against GMA-7's "Eat Bulaga." They resurrected Willie's career through another noontime show "Wowowee" and true enough, ABS-CBN's ratings improved. To no one's surprise, Willie would get into trouble once again because of his sense of importance. First, he asked, nay commanded, ABS-CBN to fire DZMM show biz commentator Jobert Sucaldito for criticizing his show and threatened to resign if the network chose Jobert over him. At the same time, he was lambasted for complaining about the insertion of the coverage of Cory's funeral into his program.
The network had no choice but to ask Willie to go on leave. Despite the unresolved legal problems at ABS-CBN, however, TV 5 managed to sign Willie to an early evening show called "Willing Willie.' Again viewership must have been the primary consideration.
Despite his checkered past, Willie attracted big ratings. After only five months, history repeats itself. Once again, Willie has crossed the line.
This time, it's because he subjected a six-year-old boy to ridicule by allowing him to perform a macho dance that you only see in gay bars. Despite Jan Jan's tears, Willie egged the boy to keep dancing. The complaints started as a whisper on social media but pretty soon, the objections got louder and louder prompting several government agencies to step in. Willie was forced to apologize.
But Willie's apology was no apology at all. When one apologizes, a person admits his mistake and promises not do it again. Willie continued to justify what he did. He says he didn't realize what the number was about. If so, he should have stopped the number and moved on to another segment. Instead, he encouraged the boy to keep on dancing despite his tears. He explained that the boy's parents did not object to Jan Jan's dancing on the show. That's no excuse. Ultimately, it was Willie's judgment that mattered.
Willie continued to stress that everything they do in the show is designed to help the poor. He issues his own threat that if the advertisers who have been urged by various groups to leave his show, his followers will boycott their products. That's what I call delusions of grandeur.
Willie has proven time and again that he cannot change his ways. It's time to take Willie off the air. TV5 chairman Manny Pangilinan did the honorable thing when he apologized for his plagiarized speech at the Ateneo and offered to resign from the Board of Trustees. Getting rid of Willie is a no-brainer.

Mercury's surface, historic image: NASA

NASA released the first picture taken of Mercury's surface by the US space agency's orbiting Messenger craft.
"Early this morning, at 5:20 am EDT (0920 GMT), Messenger captured this historic image of Mercury," NASA said.
"This image is the first ever obtained from a spacecraft in orbit about the solar system's innermost planet."
NASA releases picture of Mercury's surfaceThe spacecraft snapped 363 images over the next six hours, and more were expected to be released Wednesday in conjunction with an expert press conference to discuss the findings.
The upper part of the image shows an unusual, dark-rayed crater called Debussy, while the lower part reveals a portion of Mercury near its south pole that has never before been witnessed by spacecraft, NASA said.
NASA's Messenger craft -- which stands for MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging -- became the first vehicle to orbit Mercury on March 17.
Messenger was launched more than six years ago, traveling through the inner solar system and embarking on flybys of Earth, Venus and Mercury.
The first NASA craft to study Mercury since the Mariner mission more than three decades ago, Messenger has already been able to return a partial map of the planet's crater-filled surface after just a handful of flybys.

Lloyd Zaragoza: justice for John Apacible

Lloyd Zaragoza topped the Yahoo! Philippines trending list as users queried his name in relation to the death of his good friend, actor John Apacible last March 19. In his interview with ABS-CBN's "SNN" last week, Lloyd became emotional while talking about John, his co-star in the primetime drama "Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin," who he said was one of his inspirations to pursue show business.
In an exclusive interview with Yahoo! OMG! Philippines last Monday, March 28, Lloyd graciously recalled his fondest memories of John.
"I met him when I was 15 or 16 sa teleserye magkasama kami. Back then, I'm a skinny guy, malaki tiyan, bata may buhok pa. Wala pang tattoo. Totoy pa. Tapos I saw this big guy. Ako kasi ugali ko I don't mingle with them if I don't know them. I just sit down wait for my turn eh siya 'Parekoy, John Apacible pala.' Tapos from then on nagtetext kami, nagkikita kami sa mga trabaho. Tapos matagal kami di nagkita eh. Pagkita niya sa akin mamang mama na ako. Tapos nagkita kami sa teleserye ng MInsan Lang kita Iibigin kasi I'm one of the casts, siya rin. Militar siya ako rebel. Niyakap niya akong mahigpit. 'Hanga ako sa yo pre. Biruin mo yun. Buhay nga naman. Sobrang proud ako sa 'yo," Lloyd began.
"Parang after ten years nagkita kami, kami pa rin magkakwentuhan sa soap, walang pinagbago kasi knowing that guy, hindi siya mapapel. Pag may kwentuhan yung mga big stars sa isang table tahimik lang yun. Kasi mahiyaing tao yun. So ako naman, ganun din ako eh. Hindi ako yung nakikisawsaw. Tahimik lang kami. Kasi yung pinagkwekwentuhan namin tungkol sa gym, pagiging athletic, diet kasi he told me once na he's planning to join the Iron Man thing. He's convincing me to do that as well para new experience. So I was so devastated when I heard the news na all of a sudden patay siya. Sana nabangga na lang siya ng kotse eh kasi alam kong mabubuhay pa yun eh. Warrior yun eh. Alam mo feeling ko magka tribo kami kasi pareho kami ng paniniwala, ng gusto, vision pag dating sa health. Isa sa mga tao na nagkakaintindihan kami," he added.
According to reports, John's family will no longer file a case against his assailant, his own uncle Armand Rustia. Armand is also reportedly out on bail.
Though obviously saddedned by the decision of John's family, Lloyd respects the situation. However he said that if he were to do it his way, he would have wanted to give John the justice he deserves.
"Ako mahirap ng mag comment when it comes to that.
They invited me to say something for John dun sa bahay so ako sana magkaroon ng hustisya yun lang ang sa akin. Kung ano man yun, di ko alam kung anong nangyari eh pero gusto ko lang magkaroon ng hustisya para kay kuya John."
Lloyd also said he hopes that people won't think that he's using John's death just to be noticed.
"Ako I'm not expecting anything na gagamitin ko siya or something kasi ako nagpapakatotoo lang ako. Medyo napaiyak ako [nung interview with SNN]. Mabait siya sa akin eh tska isa sa mga tao na tumulong na isang example siya kasi. Like right now isa akong matatag na tao kasi sa mga pagsubok, isa siya sa mga nagbibigay sa akin ng advice," he said. "Sabi nga ng Mama ko 'Ano ba yang trending trending na yan? Sabi ko I'll ask my brother kasi ako hindi ako gaano ma computer. Wala sa plano ko yung gagawin ko 'to para mapunta sa Yahoo! para mapag-usapan. Wala eh kasi ako kung ano yung tanong mo yun ang isasagot ko kasi yun ang totoo. And I wanna thank those people who searched. Nagbigay ng oras para sa akin."
Getting to know Lloyd
Aside from being one of the cast members of "Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin," Lloyd is also one of the familiar faces in television because of his commercials with a popular pizza restaurant. Aside from being an actor and a model, few people know that Lloyd also shares the same passion as his sister Jessa Zaragoza: singing.
"It all started when I saw her [Jessa Zaragoza] performing onstage nung mga 15 ako o 16 [years old]. Sabi ko gusto ko ng ganyan, respeto. Of course sabi ko 'Naku may kita.' Hindi pala ganun kasi sinubukan kong kumanta hindi pala lumalabas yun pag hindi mo talaga niyakap yung musika. So I learned the hard way na yun after a while parang sinasabi nila 'Yang si Lloyd di pa hinog yan.' [Nung] pumwesto ako sa banda 'dun nakarinig ako na 'Bro pakiusap lang. Dito sa banda hindi mukha ang binibayadan sa yo.' Yung nagsabi sa akin 'nun I'm thanking him na nasabi niya 'yun kasi pinersonal ko yun na ginawa kong inspirtion. Lalo akong nanggigil na matuto," explained Lloyd.
"Ako I sing for a living ever since bago mag Greenwich. Nalibot ko na halos lahat ng bars sa Malate, sa QC sa Makati with my band until now sila pa rin yung kasama ko."
Lloyd is also known for the numerous tattoos in his body. But, in spite of the 'bad boy' image, Lloyd revealed he is living a healthy lifestyle.
"I'm very thankful nga na puro tattoo ako pero hindi ako naninigarilyo. Nagulat nga yung Ortho kasi nagpa cleaning ako last week sabi niya 'Bat wala kang pasta?' Kininditan ko siya sabi ko 'kala mo ha may tattoo lahat may bisyo ha' sabi ko 'hindi puro gatas to.' Ako I'm not encouraging people to get tattoo pero for me it's a self expression eh pero ako pag tatanungin pag bata wala pa sasabihin ko think twice thrice before getting it kasi ako nandito na yung tattoo ko eh pag-isipan nila ng marami kasi permanent na yan. Ako eh I'm so thankful lang na yung Greenwich nakita ako at naniniwal sa kin till now."
He also said his tattoos somehow limits his acting roles but he still remains grateful for all the blessings he's receiving.
"Ako I'm not expecting anything. Kung anong dumating kung ano mang yan kung kasama sa lead or hindi tatanggapin ko lang. Puro tattoos eh. Meron namang kumukuha so far. Sa Studio 23 sa Yamaha I do host the show every 8:30 am Sunday so naghohost din ako. Lahat pinapasukan ko dancing na lang hindi medyo mahirap eh," said Lloyd, laughing.
"So I'm thankful sa Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin, isa ako sa cast, giving me a break. Kasama ko nga yung talagang mga big stars. Nakakataba ng puso na kasama ako. Of course sa Greenwich, mga boss talagang sobrang parang kapatid ko na, my family, my manager na si Mama Ogie na Tatay ko na Nanay ko pa, supporting me all the way giving me yung mga pangaral. I'm so blessed right now na family ko they're in good health. I have my own place. Dati marami akong pinagdaanan talaga. Yung mga tipong pareho sa mga tao na nagsusurvive. Ngayon at least kahit papano may napundar ako. Gusto ko ikwento sa kanila yung napagdaaanan ko para kahit papano mabigyan sila ng inspiration. Kunwari medyo mahirap yung mga pinagdadaaanan mo ngayon, basta alagaan mo lang sarili mo, tiwala sa Diyos yun ang importante. Sana kahit madami nangyayari sa mundo sa ibang bansa what going on right now. Sana have faith magmahalan tayo kasi sa huli tayo tayo rin magtutulungan. No pain no gain yan ang sabi ni John. Sa lahat ng pagsubok sa lahat ng hirap, may harvest time yan so don't give up kaya natin yan."
On April 2, Saturday, 8pm, Lloyd will be having his first concert at Area 5, (Old Ratsky) Tomas Morato, Quezon City.
"It's a show for a cause for Breast Cancer Patients from Kasuso Foundation na I'm happy that my manager Mama Ogie Diaz gave me a chance to showcase my talent and to help people na rin of course yun ang gusto ko talaga makatulong din sa tao and I'm glad na maraming susuporta. Natuwa nga ako sa director ng Greenwich nung ininvite ko si Direk To sabi niya 'Weh kumakanta ka? Wag ka nga ganyan binibiro mo ako eh' 'Direk manuod ka may concert talaga ako.' The Greenwich team will watch, yung mga kasama ko sa Greenwich of course Ms. Kay Brosas will be there to support me, my special guest and yung mga cast ng 'Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin,' pupunta rin sila to support," he said.

China's death row list, 72 Pinoys

Sally Ordinario-Villanueva, Ramon Credo and Elizabeth Batain are not the only Filipinos on death row in China.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said more than 200 Filipinos have been detained in China since 2006.

Seventy-two of them are on death row for drug trafficking, 38 have life sentences and nearly 80 are serving 15-year jail terms, while 35 cases are still being heard

Only 6 cases of the 72 on death row reached the China's Supreme Court. Two of them were overturned, 3 of them were affirmed while 1 is still being reviewed.

Senate Resolution Number 1192 filed by Sen. Manny Villar stated that 111 Filipinos have been arrested in China, Hong Kong and Macau since 2008 for drug related offenses.

The latest case is that of Ilocos Sur Rep. Ronald Singson who is serving one and a half year in prison in Hong Kong for drug trafficking. He was found with more than 6 grams of cocaine in his possession at the airport in July 2010.

About 120 more Filipinos are facing death sentences in other countries. ANC

3 Pinoys executed in China today

Vice President Jejomar Binay confirmed Wednesday the three Filipino drug convicts has been executed in China.

Binay, in a television interview, said that Sally Ordinario, Ramon Credo and Elizabeth Batain had undergone lethal injection before Wednesday noon.

Credo and Ordinario-Villanueva were executed in Xiamen while Batain in Shenzhen.

No other details were availbale as of this posting.

Meanwhile, in a statement of Presidential Edwin Lacierda read by deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte, the Philippine government expressed sympathies to the families of the three Filipino drug mules, noting the incident should serve as a lesson to every overseas Filipino worker to be vigilant and not let themselves be victimized by illegal drug trafficking.

"Our government had taken every available opportunity to appeal to the authorities of China for clemency in their cases, to which the Chinese government responded with a postponement of the execution. In the end, however, the sentence was imposed," the statement said.

"The nation sympathized with the families of the condemned, sharing their sense of looming loss. We sympathize with these families now. Their deaths are a vivid lesson in the tragic toll the drug trade takes on entire families."

"We are resolved to ensure that the chain of victimization, as pushers entrap and destroy lives in pursuit of their trade, will be broken. Those who traffic in illegal drugs respect no laws, no boundaries, and have no scruples about destroying lives. Our response must be relentless, with the government and the citizenry working together must be relentless, with government and citizenry working together to ensure vigilance and mutual support to prevent our countrymen from being used by drug pushers as sacrificial pawns, whether at home or abroad," it added.

Valte said the government will be giving assistance to the families of the three.

Ramon Credo, 42, was arrested at the Gaoji International Airport in Xiamen for carrying 4,113 grams of heroin; Elizabeth Batain, 38, was apprehended at the Shenzhen Airport with 6,800 grams of the same substance; and Sally Villanueva, 32, was nabbed for carrying some 4,410 grams of the prohibited substance.

The three were previously scheduled to be executed on February 20 and 21 but was eventually postponed after Vice President Binay made a personal appeal to the Chinese government last February 18. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)

Sam Concepcion talks about Charice

Sam Concepcion, the kid whom we used to know as the "Little Big Star" champion who bested Charice Pempengco, is now all grown up, making his name in musicals and youth-oriented shows and continues to create good vibes in the showbiz industry.
In a one-on-one interview with Yahoo! OMG! Philippines after World Vision's ceremony on Friday, March 25, Sam shared his views on being a role model, his thoughts on Charice's fame, the pressures on having a wholesome image and his new upcoming projects.
Sam, together with other Jollibee Yumbassadors, led World Vision's "Flying High" graduation ceremony last Friday at the PS Bank Center in Makati City.
In 2008, Sam was chosen as World Vision's Ambassador for Children and has been participating in community visits since then. "I've been to exposure trips and it just gives me a bigger understanding of how hard it is for most Filipino youth. I try the best of my ability to spread the word and do whatever I can to help," Sam shared. Recently, Sam was chosen by Jollibee as one of its Yumbassadors along with youth leader Bam Aquino and Palanca-awardee Miro Capili.
The year has just started and things have been going well for Sam as evident in his numerous projects and endorsements. Sam was personally chosen by international singer Taylor Swift to open her Manila "Speak Now" concert in Araneta last February 19.
"Standing there performing, you could barely hear yourself because of the screaming. It's one of the greatest experiences I had in my life. Taylor's really nice, very accommodating," Sam shared, a self-confessed Taylor fan.
Aside from his weekly stint on ABS-CBN's "ASAP Rocks," Sam is a part of ABS-CBN's new youth-oriented series called "Good Vibes" to air on April. It's a show about high school students which main theme revolves around dance. Other cast members include Enrique Gil, Ivan Dorschner, James Reid and Arron Villaflor.
As many would guess it right, Sam plays the role of a good son and a popular student. "My character is an all-good kind of character, he's a valedictorian, he's the captain of the dance troop and all that, a perfect son. But the struggle of his character is that he was never appreciated," Sam discussed.
Despite his many acting roles, singing still remains to be his passion. He will be starring in a Pater Pan musical adaptation produced by Repertory Philippines and Stages.
Does Sam also want to make it big overseas just like her contemporary Charice Pempengco? "It's always an artist dream to make as many people hear their music. So, it's part of my aspiration to make my music known, to be able to share it and make impact on people's lives." Sam has previously participated in the Asian "Kung Fu Panda" movie soundtrack.
As Sam used to be in the same competition with Charice before, Charice will always be linked to Sam's name as he is always compared or even pitted against her. But, Sam just takes it in stride and always has good words for the female young singer.
"She's an inspiration to local artists. That just goes to show how huge her impact has been, she really has reached something that none of artists in the Filipino music industry has done before. It's ground-breaking, she has already made it, and is still making it," Sam shared.
For some people, Sam may seem too good to be true for having conquered the crazy world of showbiz with a good reputation and wholesome image. "I'm really just a normal kid, doing things that other teenagers do. I just keep myself grounded because there are people who are responsible for that. My family and friends help me see that I'm just like any other people," Sam shared.
Others may also think that Sam's good, wholesome image may hinder him in advancing to more mature, riskier roles. But, he is no way in a hurry to jump into the bandwagon.
"More mature roles will probably come in time as I grow old and mature then. But, at the same time, I don't wanna jump into like playing older roles right away. It just stumps your youth, your growth. I get to do my passion. I dance, sing and act. Being young is an enjoying thing to do," Sam shared.

dzME radio anchor Marlina "Len" Sumera suspect reward of P450,000

police have drawn up sketches of the three suspected killers of dzME radio anchor Marlina "Len" Sumera and a reward of P450,000 was put up for information leading to the suspects' arrest.

The Northern Police District (NPD) said the composite illustrations of the criminals were based on the testimonies of witnesses, radio dzME reported on Monday.

Sumera was gunned down near her house in Malabon City as she was preparing to go to dzME studios in Caloocan City to host a public service program. She was buried on Sunday.

NPD Director Chief Superintendent Edgardo Ladao described the male gunman as:
20 to 21 years old;
5'2" to 5'3" tall;
of medium build, and
brown-skinned.

The gunman was reportedly wearing a white T-shirt and cargo pants when he shot Sumera. He was also said to be carrying a shoulder bag.

The male lookout was described as:
20 to 21 years old;
about 5'2" to 5'3" tall, and
of medium build.

He was allegedly wearing a yellow T-shirt and cargo pants during the incident was toting a black backpack.

A third male suspect was described as:
45 to 50 years old;
5’2" to 5’3" tall, and
of medium build.

He was reportedly wearing a white jacket and faded denim pants.

But the dzME report said the NPD is still gathering leads on another lookout, a woman who supposedly told the gunman that Sumera was in the area.

Ladao also said their initial investigation showed that a 9-mm pistol may have been used in killing Sumera because of the gunshot wound in the nape.

Reward goes up to P450k

Meanwhile, the reward for information leading to the solution of the crime went up to P450,000, a separate dzME report said.

Malabon Rep. Josephine Veronique Lacson-Noel offered P250,000 as she said cases of violence, such as the killing of one of its residents, "are a hindrance to our campaign for a peaceful city and nation."

"I hope this encourages witnesses to come forward with information and assist us in serving her family the justice they deserve," she said.

Earlier, the Malabon local government offered P100,000 while the National Press Club and Alyansa ng Filipinong Mamamahayag offered P50,000.

The NPD also offered another P50,000. – VVP, GMA News

Senator Panfilo Lacson finally surfaced

National Police spokesman Agrimero Cruz said Senator Panfilo Lacson flew to central Cebu city from Hong Kong around noon Saturday.

Lacson has insisted he had nothing to do with the killings of high-profile publicist Bubby Dacer and his driver in 2000.

He claims the murder charges were part of a conspiracy against him by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Lacson was an an arch-critic of Arroyo.

The Court of Appeals ruled there was no probable cause for the arrest warrant. The trial court's options could include ordering a reinvestigation or dismissing the case.

Elizabeth Taylor laid to rest

Elizabeth Taylor was given a small private funeral service attended by family and close friends in the Los Angeles area on Thursday, a day after she died of congestive heart failure.
The Oscar-winning actress, 79, was laid to rest at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, outside Los Angeles -- the same place where her close friend, singer Michael Jackson, was buried in 2009.
Taylor's service was scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., but started 15 minutes later than planned at the actress' request.
Her spokeswoman said in a statement Taylor wanted the service to include the announcement: "She even wanted to be late to her own funeral."
The coffin for Taylor was draped by a blanket of gardenias, violets and lily of the valley, and the actress who was known for her violet eyes was interred at Forest Lawn's Great Mausoleum beneath a marble angel.
The service lasted about one hour and included a reading of Gerard Manley Hopkins' poem "The Leaden Echo and the Golden Echo" by actor Colin Farrell, described as a "close friend" of Taylor.
Other poems were read by Taylor's son, Michael Wilding, grandson and daughter Liza Burton Tivey. Her grandson, Rhys Tivey performed "Amazing Grace" on a trumpet.
Taylor, who married eight times (twice to actor Richard Burton), is survived by four children, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Her representatives previously had said that a public memorial would be announced at a later date.

Myanmar hits by Magnitude-7.0 quake

A magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck eastern Myanmar Thursday, the US Geological Survey reported.
The epicentre, in the hills of Myanmar close to the borders with Thailand and Laos, was only 10 kilometres (six miles) deep.
It was located 90 kilometres (56 miles) north of Chiang Rai in Thailand and 235 kilometres (146 miles) north-north-east of Chiang Mai, Thailand's second city and a popular tourist destination.
No tsunami warning was issued, with seismologists saying the quake was too far inland to generate a devastating wave in the Indian Ocean.

Eric Abidal leaves hospital after liver surgery

Eric Abidal has left hospital after surgery to remove a liver tumour and could begin physical exercise in about four weeks, the club said Thursday.
"The player received the green light to leave hospital (Wednesday evening) and is resting at home," it said, quoting the club's medical services.
His recovery "has been good, and he has shown no complications".
He will "recuperate at home and in four weeks he should be able to do some physical exercises, before returning to training with the squad", it said.
The 31-year-old French international underwent a three-hour operation on March 17 at a Barcelona hospital to remove the tumour.
A prolonged absence for the player would be a blow to Barcelona, who are in the final straight of another magnificent season.
